Costa Rica Sea Turtle Conservation
Where: Playa Hermosa National Park, Pacific Coast, Costa Rica
Focus: Monitor nesting Olive Ridley turtles and support the turtle hatchery.
When: Mid-August to December | High season – September.
Duration: 2-4 weeks+

Cost: 2 weeks from GBP 699 | 3 weeks from GBP 899.
As a volunteer, you will:
- Observe and monitor the nesting habits of female sea turtles.
- Collect scientific data and monitor turtle populations and behaviour.
- Patrol the beach during the day or night (between 2-5 hours per shift).
- Construct hatcheries where at risk nests can be relocated.
- Mark adult turtles and release hatchlings.
- Maintain the centre’s facilities and shelters.
- Get involved in beach clean ups and tree planting.
Accommodation: On arrival, volunteers stay in a homestay in San Jose for two days during orientation, before moving to the volunteer house. This project site is located in the Playa Hermosa National Park. There are four permanent park ranger staff that work on the project which is located, close to the Carara Biological Reserve. Access to the public is limited meaning only rangers and volunteers are permitted onto the beach at night.
Sleeping: Shared, dormitory-style rooms for up to 6 people. Volunteers should bring sleeping bags and pillows.
Food: 3 healthy meals a day at the project site (two meals a day at the homestay).
Support: 24-hour in-country support; International HQ emergency support and back-up; UK residential briefing weekend available.
Transport: Airport pick up from San José Juan Santamaria airport on the Sunday and transfer to homestay.
