Who: Marine Conservation Society UK (MCSUK)
Where: United Kingdom
What: A national beach cleaning and litter surveying programme, helping people all around the UK to care for their coastline.
About: Some of the UK’s best-loved marine wildlife is under threat from the waste and litter in our seas, with hundreds of species accidentally eating or becoming entangled in litter. It’s also dangerous for people and damaging to our tourism and fishing industries.
Beachwatch is something the whole family can get involved in. As well as cleaning the beach, the rubbish from each clean is sorted and analysed. Some of the most common pollutants found on UK beaches are:
- Plastic/ Polystyrene pieces
- Packets (crisps, sweets, sandwiches…)
- Cigarette stubs
- Caps and Lids
- String/ Cord
- Wet wipes
- Cotton bud sticks
- Fishing line
- Plastic cutlery
- Drinking straws
