ecoFin – the world’s first sustainable surfboard fins made with recycled waste from Indonesia
Who: Five Oceans
Where: Byron Bay, Australia
About: The founders of Five Oceans are surfers, who as well as chasing waves, encounter heavy plastic pollution. They decided to create something useful from it and inspire surfers around the world. They designed the world’s first sustainable surfboard fin made with recycled waste from Indonesia reinforced with fibreglass.
Approximately 100 bottle caps go into one set of ecoFins. Rubbish is collected and sorted from Indonesia, such as from the beaches of Bali. This is then sent to the recycling facilities in Java, where the bottle tops are recycled into pellets. The pellets are then sent to Australia to be refined and molded into unique ‘Ocean Composite’ fins. The ecoFin is a super light all-rounder with great strength and flex for surfers of all levels, for small to medium height waves and varied board types.
Five Oceans are now producing new products using their innovative process, such as the ecoFlyer frisbee.
