Swim with humpback whales and their calves in the Kingdom of Tonga.

Whale Discoveries

Marine Life: Humpback whales

Where: The Kingdom of Tonga

When: Whales begin arriving from Antartica in late July to give birth. The waters around Tonga are free from any major predators so the calves have a chance to grow before making the long swim back in October.

How: By boat and snorkelling. There are strict restrictions on the number of people who can be in the water at one time with the whales. You should be comfortable swimming in the open ocean.

How to experience

Sea Fans recommends Whale Discoveries – a family run business with over 20 years of experience, and an innate passion and respect for the whales. Whale Discoveries operate two different ways to interact with the whales:

  • Liveaboard – a fast sailing catamaran, perfectly sized and appointed for exploring the myriad reefs and uninhabited islands of Tonga.
  • Lotofutu Beach Barn – The Barn is an environmentally aware and pro-active eco adventure stay – 100% off grid.
